Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such medications should be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
