Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like conventional biological terror, but inside Together exists a intense contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the countryside for her career. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they still love each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.
