The Legendary Anime Ends a Quarter-Century Tradition in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included numerous filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, once the current storyline concludes, the animated series will go on a three-month break until April, when the next major arc begins.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, One Piece will release a pair of cours every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei states this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime previously took a six-month pause that started in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the animation quality and allow the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to supply viewers with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments appeared during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with some alternatively handling more material or additional to compensate for time.

This concludes of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of creation, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and naturally itself have so many side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in seasons, with a couple at most coming out each annually, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
