In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
