The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.
This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is located around 13km from his dwelling.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being held in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.
Background on Conviction
Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, many his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were detained.
The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
