Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
