Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
