A minimum of thirteen individuals perish and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
